A mini split is a heat pump without ducts: one unit outside, one or more heads mounted on the walls inside, joined by refrigerant lines through a small hole in the wall. When one stops cooling, which head is affected tells you a lot before anyone opens anything. Repairs run from a cheap electrical part to a compressor that turns the job into a replacement question, and whether parts are still made for your model can matter as much as the fault itself. Furnace or heat pump in Fort Wayne covers the ducted side of the same decision.
Can a mini split be repaired?
Usually yes. Mini splits develop electrical faults, refrigerant leaks, blocked drains and airflow problems, and most of those are ordinary repairs. Two things decide whether it is worth doing: what the work costs, and whether the parts can still be had. Boards and sensors are often made for the model, so an older or lesser-known unit is sometimes beyond help.
This is one way mini splits differ from a ducted system. Many of the common parts on a central air conditioner are generic and widely stocked. Mini splits lean on inverter-driven electronics, and a control board is usually made for the model, so it often has to come from the manufacturer. Support for discontinued models runs out.
Worth asking on the phone: does the company service your brand, and can they get parts for it. Not every firm works on every make, and some will not take on a system that was installed by its owner rather than by a contractor.
One head is not cooling, or none of them are
Which heads are affected is the most useful thing you can tell a technician, and it costs nothing to work out. If every head has stopped, attention goes to the outdoor unit, the power feeding it, or the shared controls. If one head has stopped and the others are fine, that head, its own controls and the refrigerant line serving it are where someone will look first.
On a multi-zone system each indoor unit has its own refrigerant lines and its own controls, which is why one can stop while the rest keep running. Where the valves that meter refrigerant to each head actually sit varies by design, and on many systems they are in the outdoor unit rather than in the head. Single-zone systems have one head and one outdoor unit, so the distinction does not arise.
Check the modes before you assume a fault. Most multi-zone systems cannot heat one room and cool another at the same time. Set one head to heat while another is cooling and one of them will stop or sit idle, which looks exactly like a breakdown. Put every head on the same mode and see whether the problem goes away.
None of this tells you what has broken. It does tell a technician where to start, which is worth having before anyone arrives.
Want someone to look at it? Call (260) 305-9335 and say which heads are affected and what the remote is set to.
Why is my mini split running but not cooling?
Start with the operating mode, because the fix is free. A mini split remote has heating, cooling, dry and fan modes. Set to fan, the head circulates room temperature air without cooling it, which is not a fault at all. A new installation left in the wrong mode does the same thing. If the mode and temperature are right, the likely causes need a technician.

The filters are the other thing worth looking at. Mini split heads take flat mesh filters that lift out of the front panel, and every manual tells the owner to clean them. Choked filters reduce airflow enough to stop a head cooling properly.
Past the mode and the filters it stops being a homeowner job. Low refrigerant, a failed indoor fan motor, a stuck expansion valve and a fault in the outdoor unit all produce air that is not cold, and telling them apart means measuring pressures and temperatures.
Why does a mini split freeze up?
Ice on the indoor coil or the refrigerant lines usually points at restricted airflow or low refrigerant, though a sensor or control fault can do it too. Dirty filters or a blocked coil let the coil get cold enough to freeze condensation. The ice on its own does not tell you which it is. Running it iced up is what turns a repair into a bigger one.

Switch the head off and leave it off. The ice has to melt before anyone can test the system properly, and a frozen coil can send water down the wall instead of into the drain.
In winter, ice on the outdoor unit is a different thing and often normal. A heat pump builds up frost and clears it on a defrost cycle. Frost that never clears, or a solid block of ice, is a fault.
What mini split repair costs
The spread is wide because the parts are. An electrical component is in the low hundreds. A refrigerant leak depends entirely on where it is, since finding it is most of the work. A compressor is the one that changes the conversation, because on a smaller or older system the quote can approach what a replacement costs.
Published national ranges, to give you the shape of it:
- Thermostat or sensor replacement: roughly $100 to $400
- Electrical diagnosis or repair: roughly $100 to $500
- Capacitor replacement: roughly $150 to $400
- Fan motor replacement: roughly $300 to $700
- Control board replacement: roughly $300 to $800
- Refrigerant leak repair: roughly $300 to $1,000, and higher where the leak is hard to reach
- Compressor replacement: roughly $1,500 to $2,800, worth weighing against a replacement on an older system
Treat those as a guide. They are national figures, not Fort Wayne ones, and a real quote is the only number that applies to your system. A multi-zone system costs more to replace outright than a single head, so the same repair bill reads differently depending on what you have. What it costs to replace an air conditioner here covers the replacement side.
Are mini splits worth repairing?
It comes down to three things: the age of the system, whether parts are still available, and how the repair quote compares with replacing what has failed. Carrier puts a well-maintained mini split at ten to fifteen years and Bryant at twelve to fifteen, with twenty or more possible on either account. A large repair on older equipment is worth getting a replacement quote against.
On a multi-zone system there is a middle option that does not exist with ducted equipment. If one head has failed and the outdoor unit is sound, that head can sometimes be replaced on its own. Ask whether that is possible before agreeing to replace everything.
You may come across the $5000 rule, which multiplies the age of the system by the cost of the repair. It is a rough guideline and nothing more, and it was built around a single system rather than one outdoor unit serving several heads. Compare the actual quote against the cost of replacing what has failed. Air conditioning repair explains the rule in more detail.
Before you call someone
Three questions save a wasted visit. Does the company service your brand of mini split. Can they get parts for your model. And will they work on the system given how it was installed, because some firms decline units that were installed by the homeowner. Asking those on the phone takes a minute and avoids paying a diagnostic fee to be told no.
Two rules apply to whoever comes out. Anyone doing work that could release refrigerant has to meet federal EPA Section 608 requirements, and attaching gauges to read pressures is enough on its own to count. In Fort Wayne the business also has to be registered with the Allen County Building Department and employ a supervisor who holds a county license.
Have the brand, the model number and the age ready when you call. The model number is on a plate on the outdoor unit.
Questions people ask
How much does it cost to have a mini split serviced?
Carrier publishes a national range of $100 to $650 for cleaning filters or an indoor unit, and the spread is that wide because it depends on how much of the head has to come apart. That is national, not a Fort Wayne price.
What you are paying for is cleaning: filters, the indoor blower wheel, the coil and the condensate drain. Ask which of those the visit covers and what the total is before booking, because a quick filter rinse and a full head cleaning are different jobs.
What is the average lifespan of a mini split?
Ten to twenty years, depending on whose guide you read and how it is looked after. Carrier says ten to fifteen for a well-maintained system and Bryant says twelve to fifteen, and both allow twenty or more where the filters are kept clean and it gets serviced.
Installation quality, how much the system runs and whether the filters get cleaned move it more than the brand on the front. A head in a room that is heated and cooled year round works harder than one in a spare bedroom.
Why is my brand new mini split not cooling?
On a new installation, start with the remote rather than assuming a faulty unit. Wrong mode is the common one. Beyond that, a system that never cools properly often points at the installation: the refrigerant charge, the line connections, or a head sized wrong for the room.
Go back to whoever installed it and check the warranty before you pay anyone else to look at it. Whether the work is covered depends on the equipment and the terms, and parts coverage and labor coverage are often not the same.
Can one indoor head be replaced on its own?
Sometimes, on a multi-zone system, and it is worth asking about before agreeing to replace everything. The replacement head has to be compatible with the outdoor unit you already have, and a manufacturer may not support pairing a new indoor unit with an older outdoor one.
If the outdoor unit is the failed part, replacing that alone is less often sensible. It is the expensive half, and matching a new outdoor unit to existing heads brings its own compatibility problem.
Who is allowed to work on a mini split here?
Two requirements, one federal and one local. Federal EPA Section 608 rules cover anyone doing work that could release refrigerant, and that includes simply attaching gauges to read pressures.
Locally, Allen County requires the business to be registered with its Building Department and to employ a supervisor who holds a county license. Registration and a license are not the same thing, so it is fair to ask which the company has.
